From its humble Saxon beginnings, Bury St Edmunds became home to one of the most powerful abbeys in medieval Europe. It has seen glory, turmoil and scandal over the centuries of which few small towns could boast. Today, it remains a busy and beautiful market town at the heart of East Anglia.

Bury St Edmunds grew up around the gates of a Benedictine monastery and still retains a Norman town plan, in which the main streets lead to the Abbey precinct. The Abbey's rise to fame came about because of the martyrdom of King Edmund and his subsequent burial there. The town's importance over the centuries is reflected in its many distinctive buildings and monuments, which stand testimony to the people and deeds that make up the history of Bury St Edmunds.
